vekic is considered one of the most important croatian painters of the younger generation. in his works he deals with everyday motifs such as austos, insects, bridges, footballers and models to highlight the state of contemporary society. in recent years matko has transferred his characteristic power of composition and dynamism to media ranging from canvases painted with a mixture of oil, wax and varnish to cut iron objects, initiating a dialogue with the surrounding reality and interpreting symbols, emblems, ornaments and insignia offered by the contemporary world. since 1996 he has been working, with a short interruption, at the university of applied arts in zagreb. after numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, he was selected in 2009, together with nikola koydl and zoltan novak, to represent the croatian pavilion at the 53rd biennial di venezia. his works can be found internationally in many museums and private collections. he has received more than a dozen awards and recognitions for his artistic work. the series “archipelago” was shown in 2021 in the museum of contemporary art in zagreb.
