peter blaas

the paintings of peter blaas should not be considered in the sense of fragmentary relinquishment, but rather as an attempt at completion, at trying to possess oneself of an imagination through which exactly these fragments could be completed. these fragments, however, are not conceived by the artist as incomplete - they are, similar to robert musil's "the man without qualities" in literature, intended to return the beholder to the actual state of being. (fred arnold)

fragments are parts of a whole that is no longer visible. since our perception can only be subjective and, most of all, partial, we are barred from completely comprehending a piece of work.
likewise the whole always takes priority in our imagination, a fragment therefore necessitates an associative supplement on the part of the beholder, i.e. he/she would focus on what is absent or present, respectively. in this case, however, every single fragment could be regarded as a whole again.

peter blaas, born in munich in 1942, studied at the academy of fine arts vienna from 1960-64. the artist lives and works in innsbruck.
